I would collect the description of Satori from different sources, like pixiv dictionary or original games and books. Maybe I would also write my personal understanding of her character. But I need to figure out if it would against the copyright first.
I would to write down my understanding of Satori Komeiji below. I think the visitors to this website already know her well so I would just discuss those points those points on which I often disagree with popular opinions. They're my personal opinion. I just want to express my idea and I would be happy if someone read them wether he/she agrees with me or not.
1.High or low self-esteemWe already know Satori is confident in her
mind-reading ability. And her evaluation to
herself is 11 points. Considering this,
it's unreasonable to say she has low self-esteem.
But in many fan-made story, she is described to
be that. A typical scene is that she would feel
flattered if someone shows a little kindness to
her. Such description is usually related to her
background.
About her past, all we know is that she moved
to the underground world and always staying in
Chireiden from then on to isolate herself from
others that hate her. A hated person indeed tends to
be self-esteem, but it's not necessary. It's also
reasonable to assume Satori also hates others back.
Or she might don't care other's hatred, and she moved
just because she wants to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
Judged from her behavior in Foul Detective
Satori, the last assumption seems to be the most
correct one.
So I think she has high self-esteem. And if
communicating with others, she would just act normally.
Another typical scene in fan-made story is that Satori
lives happily in company of Koishi, Rin and Utsuho.
I think Satori views Rin and Utsuho as excellent pets
or subordinates instead of close family members. In Subterranean
Animism, after Utsuho got over-powered, Rin didn't dare
to ask Satori for help. So she released vengeful spirits to
alert others on the ground and expected external help. Here,
we should notice that Satori noticed nothing during the accident
until meeting Reimu/Marisa. Based on this, I think Satori is not
so close with them.
Koishi is absolutely viewed as her close family member.
In many place, we can see Satori cares about her younger sister.
But in Strange Creators of Outer World, Satori said it's a
pity that Koishi refused the mind-reading ability. We know that
Satori is proud of her mind-reading ability. I think she would
view Koishi like a disabled relative. For Satori, their life would
be a mix of happiness and sadness.
It's a very complex problem so I could only give out my guession.
In Japenese, there're many ways to spell Satori in official
material. さとり,覚and覚(さとり). I didn't see
it be spelt in katakana(サトリ) in official material. They're too
confusing for me. I guess さとり is her name, and 覚(さとり) is the
name of her race, though they're both Satori in English.
And 覚(さとり) is different with a kind of youkai which also
called Satori in a Japenese folklore. It has high probability that
the former one is inspired by the later one, but the former one is
still a special race that only exists in Touhou story.
4.1. How to read?
Well, it's quite unclear.
In Subterranean Animism,
we got an impression that she use her third eye to "see" other's
thought. And Koishi, who abandoned her ability, has closed her eye,
which hints that the mind-reading ability is directly connected to
the eye. A simple explaination is that the third eye works in the
same way as normal eye. When someone is in the sight, Satori would
have a vision image of his thought. In Foul Detective Satori,
there is a scene describes that Satori moved her third eye behind
to not offend Hatate. It supports that she read someone's mind in
vision sight.
But there are still some scenes where this
surpose doesn't work.In Subterranean Animism, if we play as
Reimu&Yukari, when we meet Satori,we would read that Satori tried
to also read Yukari's mind but failed because Yukari is on the ground
in distance. There, Satori actually tried to read someone's mind
even he is not in her sight. If she can catch someone's thought in
a limited distance, her mind-reading ability would more likely to
be an active telepathic radar system instead of a optical eyeball.
In Foul Detective Satori, we can also read several
pages describing Satori is tire of recieve chaotic thought from
numerous spirit. In this way, her mind-reading ability is more to
similar to a passive telepathic sonar.
So there are many
contradictory description of her mind-reading ability and none of
them is solid enough to convince us that others is error which didn't
get noticed by the author when he was writing story.
We
can look forward to more contents about her in future officail works
and it might give out a clear explanation of her ability.
4.2 What can she read?
It's clear that Satori can read another's "thought". But it's unclear
that what's thought. So I want to write down my own understand here.
It would be a boring and rough philosophical short essay. You can just
skip it because it's not so related to Satori's identity.
